Mountain Pine Beetle
The Province is currently dealing with the largest Mountain Pine Beetle infestation since the B.C. Forest Service was created in 1912.
Allowable Annual Cuts are being adjusted to enable accelerated harvesting rates in order to recover maximum economic value from attacked stands of pine. Forests that have died as a result of Mountain Pine Beetle infestation, along with debris left behind from stepped-up harvesting, pose increased fire hazards to nearby communities and First Nations.
The Ministry of Forests and Range, Canadian Forest Service and other agencies are working cooperatively to lessen beetle impacts - including the potential for wildfire - in our forests.
