Support for Communities and First Nations
With funding provided by the Ministry of Forests and Range, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities has money available for operational fuel treatments, including areas affected by Mountain Pine Beetle.
The Ministry of Forests and Range and the Union of BC Municipalities are working together with First Nations Emergency Services Society (FNESS) to provide funding and technical assistance for First Nations communities for planning and treatment of Mountain Pine Beetle affected timber that is adjacent to First Nations communities.

In September 2005 the Mountain Pine Beetle Emergency Response: Canada-B.C. Implementation Strategy was released. From this strategy $24.8 million is expected to be directed over three years for fuel management treatments for Mountain Pine Beetle affected areas to better protect communities and First Nations.
More than 70 First Nations have traditional territories within British Columbia's mountain pine beetle-affected zone. Protecting First Nations interests was a topic at the B.C. First Nations and the Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic forum held Sept. 19-20, 2005 in Prince George.
There is also funding available through the federal Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative for First Nations and owners of non-industrial private forest land property over 10 hectares in size, to develop and implement beetle management measures.
